Asynchronous Progress Indicator (API)
Asynchronous Progress Indicator is a video installation which examines the psychological responses manifested during the state of waiting. Though periods of waiting can be irritating or disconcerting for some, they can also be a meditative respite for others. Depending on the tendency of the viewer, this piece has the potential to become a visually captivating experience or an annoyance in anticipation of something that never materializes.
An Asynchronous Progress Indicator (API) is the animated icon which appears on your computer screen or mobile device after an action command has been given by the user but before that action takes place. It is the computer’s way of suggesting that it's thinking, processing, attempting to sort out the answer. Unlike a progress bar, which shows how much of the required thinking has been completed and provides the user the psychologically satisfying knowledge of approximately how much longer they have to wait, the API is indefinite. It suggests the prospect of an eternal state of in-between.
